A couple of million cigarettes seized by Australian Border Power officers as Perth man is charged with smuggling

A Perth man has been charged with smuggling after Australian Border Power officers seized multiple million cigarettes in two sea containers despatched from India.

X-rays and sniffer canines alerted ABF officers to the presence of tobacco in one of many containers when it was being examined in February.

It will likely be alleged the container held 1,104kg of molasses tobacco, 810,000 cigarettes, 77.58kg of chewing tobacco and prohibited Kamini capsules containing opium.

The worth of the obligation owed on the molasses tobacco and cigarettes was greater than $1.84 million.

ABF officers then searched an Osborne Park enterprise and a home in Scarborough.

The ABF can be investigating a second container that arrived in March they may allege held 1608kg of molasses tobacco, 480,000 cigarettes and 98.2kg of chewing tobacco.

ABF performing WA regional commander Emma Newman praised the officers who recognized the primary suspicious consignment.
