BEIRUT — Syria’s state media says artillery shelling by authorities forces has pounded components of the northwestern Idlib province the place militants have been attempting to infiltrate.
SANA stated Saturday’s shelling targeted in town of Tamanaa close to Maaret al-Numan that was taken this week by al-Qaida-linked militants from Turkey-backed opposition fighters.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated the federal government shelled six areas in and close to Idlib province.
Earlier this month, members of the al-Qaida-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, Arabic for Levant Liberation Committee, or HTS, took over management of Idlib province and the encompassing countryside after forcing rival insurgents to just accept a deal for a civil administration run by HTS of their areas.
The developments threaten to derail a cease-fire within the space reached in September between Turkey and Russia.
